Walk the Neighborhood
If your move is taking you to a new area, it’s important to get a sense of how pet-friendly your new neighborhood will be. You want to make sure that the area of your home is one that’s safe and suitable for your pet, too. This also allows you to gauge any potential problems that could come from the area. Having a dog will require you to walk him around the neighborhood, for example. There could be unfriendly neighborhood dogs or other pets running loose. If this is not something your dog is used to, it could pose a problem.
On Moving Day
When it’s time to pack things up and leave for the new home, it’s essential that you know exactly what to do for you and your pet’s move. Don’t let the packing and moving cause fear and anxiety in your or your pet. Cats and dogs might cause problems and even become irritable. To keep their anxiety low, plan to put your pet in a secluded, quiet area like an unused room or yard. You might even think about boarding your pet or having a friend take them to a different location to keep them away from the hustle and bustle of moving day.
Transporting Your Pet
Your pet is also moving to a new home, right along with you and your furniture. Make it a point to take some time to acclimate your pet to the unavoidable trip to their new home, especially if your pet has rarely been in a crate or vehicle. You can get your pet to be comfortable with a crate by letting it move in and out of it, ideally a few weeks before the move. Use treats to help them form positive associations with the crate. You can also add blankets inside the crate to lessen bumps on the go so that your pet is comfortable all the way.
Coming Home
Before you introduce your pet to the new home, make one last round of checking for any hazards like open windows or poisonous houseplants. After you secure your pet’s safety, you can introduce them to their new home! Be sure to help your pet acclimate by offering encouragement and comfort. Exploring the neighborhood with your pet is a good way to get acquainted with your new area. What this does is that it helps you and your pet become more familiar with the area, so that if your pet does escape or wander off, it can find its way back home.
