During the dog days of summer in Central Georgia, it’s not uncommon to have weeks where it rains every afternoon followed by several weeks with no rainfall at all. This can play havoc with your schedule of lawn maintenance – particularly if you’re fortunate enough to have an automatic sprinkler system. It’s important to remember to turn off the automatic sprinklers during weeks with frequent afternoon thunderstorms; or better yet, install a rain sensor that will recognize when Mother Nature has done more than enough to keep your grass healthy.
In addition to the risk of damaging your lawn by over watering, you may also find yourself mowing the grass more frequently than you’d like. It’s also important to realize that different types of grasses require different amounts of water. So if you’re like me and have Bermuda in your front yard and St. Augustine in the back yard, you’ll need to maintain two different schedules for watering the lawn.
A Google search will overload you with contradictory advice regarding proper amounts of water for a particular type of lawn, best time of day to water, etc. I’ve found these two sites to be the best for lawn and garden care in Georgia.
